Lengthening curtains using exactly one straight seam. \u00a0You betcha!\u00a0 This short cut helped me lengthen curtains, ALL my curtains in a weekend. \u00a0That\u2019s a tall order, but when you just moved from a house with 8-foot ceilings to one with 10-foot ceilings, you have no other options.\u00a0 I don\u2019t believe in buying new curtains for an entire house when you have a lot of perfectly good (although woefully short) curtains on hand.\u00a0 Plus, they already match my furniture and d\u00e9cor\u2014so to the sewing machine we go to lengthen curtains.\u00a0 Need curtains?\u00a0 I love the selection on Houzz!<\/a><\/p>\n

Why this project is made for the beginning seamstress<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lengthening curtains is a home improvement dream project\u2014especially for beginners.\u00a0 \u201cBut highly visible curtains need an expert\u2019s touch,\u201d you say.\u00a0 \u201cLet me start with something small,\u201d you say.\u00a0 No and no.\u00a0 Small sewing projects require more precision than big ones\u2014trust me on this one.\u00a0 Plus, have you ever examined a new pair of curtains?\u00a0 Unless you buy designer brands, those curtains feature some of the worst sewing I\u2019ve ever seen\u2014crooked stitches, uneven liners, and puckered hems.\u00a0 Trust me, you can sew that well using only your Home Ec (now FACS) experience.\u00a0 Besides, I\u2019m only asking you to sew one straight stitch per curtain panel\u2014you got this, girl!<\/p>\n

The key to making lengthening curtains nice and easy is to use a second set of curtains for the extra length<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s often waaay cheaper to buy a second set of curtain panels for your add-on material.\u00a0 Plus, it saves you so much work! Curtains are already hemmed on the sides and they have a bottom hem! \u00a0If you want to be a rebel and buy fabric for the length\u2014I\u2019m not stopping you. But you\u2019ve just added three more seams you must sew to each panel.<\/p>\n

Full Tutorial:\u00a0 How to Lengthen Curtains with One Seam<\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 1:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Determine how long your new curtains need to be.\u00a0 If you\u2019re not sure, use this guideline.\u00a0 Always hang your curtains between 4\u201d-6\u201d below your ceiling.\u00a0 Yes, that high.\u00a0 It draws your eyes up, making the room look bigger.\u00a0 We all want bigger rooms, so let your curtains do the work.\u00a0 Then hang your curtain rod so that it\u2019s ready for your longer curtains.<\/p>\n

Next, decide if you want your curtains brushing the floor, or pooling on the floor.\u00a0 No pooling curtains in bathrooms or kitchens please.<\/p>\n

If your curtains are going to brush the floor, then measure from the rod to the floor.\u00a0 That\u2019s the length you\u2019ll need.\u00a0 If you\u2019re pooling the curtains, I add 4 inches.\u00a0 You can add more if you want a more dramatic poof at the bottom (cute in nurseries and little girl\u2019s rooms).\"Ultimate<\/p>\n

STEP 2:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Measure your curtains.\u00a0 Twice.\u00a0 There\u2019s a story here about curtain packaging labelled wrong\u2014trust me on this.\u00a0 Measure twice.\u00a0 For this featured set, my curtain measured 86\u201d and I needed 116\u201d.\u00a0 But wait!\u00a0 I need more than that because my curtain rod pocket is 4\u201d down from the top of the rod.\u00a0 I need 120\u201d curtains for everything to look right.<\/p>\n

So, my added length needs to be 34\u201d plus the seam allowance.<\/p>\n

STEP 3:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cut the second set of curtains for the added length. \u00a0Make sure you measure up from the bottom hem (in my case 34\u201d plus a 1\u201d seam allowance- so 35\u201d total) and then cut.\u00a0 We\u2019re saving tons of work by using the finished hem on the second set of curtains as our final hem.<\/p>\n

STEP 4:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fold the cut end of the second set of curtains over twice (fold down \u00bd\u201d and again \u00bd\u201d) and iron.\u00a0 Then pin it to the bottom of the original curtains.<\/p>\n

STEP 5:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sew a straight seam across where it\u2019s pinned.\u00a0 That\u2019s it!\u00a0 Repeat for your second panel.\u00a0\"Ultimate<\/p>\n
