Ah, Instagram with your beautiful white kitchens, and perfect mid-century modern living rooms.\u00a0 Pinterest, how we love your quick tips for keeping our houses cleaner and making it easier to organize our bathrooms.\u00a0 If only we implemented any of the hundreds of ideas on our pin boards\u2014but we don\u2019t.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-709\" src=\"https:\/\/www.blowingawayoutwest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Pin-Board-Reality-Pinterest-651x1024.jpg\" alt=\"7 tips \" width=\"651\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.blowingawayoutwest.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Pin-Board-Reality-Pinterest-651x1024.jpg 651w, https:\/\/www.blowingawayoutwest.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Pin-Board-Reality-Pinterest-382x600.jpg 382w, https:\/\/www.blowingawayoutwest.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Pin-Board-Reality-Pinterest-600x944.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.blowingawayoutwest.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Pin-Board-Reality-Pinterest.jpg 763w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 651px) 100vw, 651px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Is it because we prefer to dream, but have lost the will to chase the dream?\u00a0 Or is it because we don\u2019t know how to begin, let alone how to finish?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[bctt tweet=&#8221;Pinterest, we love your ideas but how do we make them reality?&#8221; username=&#8221;@BlowingAwayWest&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Take these steps to get your project off your pin board and into real life.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Get motivated.<\/u> Knowing that it\u2019s time to make your laundry room functional isn\u2019t enough to get you to tackle that project.\u00a0 Motivation is more about feeling than about knowing. \u00a0You must tap into a good mood to get anything started.\u00a0 Quit looking at the problems with your laundry room and imagine how great it\u2019s going to look when you\u2019re done.\u00a0 Focus on the things you\u2019re going to love about the project and you\u2019ve taken the first step to tackling it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>[bctt tweet=&#8221;Quit looking at the problems and imagine it complete.&#8221; username=&#8221;@BlowingAwayWest&#8221;]<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Track your Progress.<\/u> This one comes straight from the smarties at Harvard Business Review, \u201cthe more frequently people experience that sense of progress, the more likely they are to be creatively productive in the long run.\u201d \u00a0Tracking your progress increases your creativity?\u00a0 Sign me up!\u00a0 \u00a0I like to take a series of photos as I work on a project so I can see how far I\u2019ve come. Spreadsheet trackers are also high on my list of motivators.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>[bctt tweet=&#8221;Tracking progress makes you creatively productive in the long run.&#8221; username=&#8221;@BlowingAwayWest&#8221;]<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Know the Reward.<\/u> It\u2019s almost impossible to stay motivated if you can\u2019t see the end game.\u00a0 Write down all the reasons why this project is going to totally change your home or life, and why it\u2019s going to be kickin\u2019 awesome.\u00a0 I also like to imagine how my mom and my friends are going to react when they see it for the first time.\u00a0 Those little head-movies keep me in the game for the long-haul.\u00a0 You also get an unexpected reward\u2014but you\u2019ll have to wait until the end of the post for that one.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>[bctt tweet=&#8221;It&#8217;s impossible to stay motivated if you can&#8217;t see the end game.&#8221; username=&#8221;@BlowingAwayWest&#8221;]<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Break it up!<\/u> Any big project looks like the Loch Ness Monster from afar\u2014all out-of-focus, massive and intimidating.\u00a0 Break any big project into little chunks that you can complete in 2-4 hours, and write them down.\u00a0 Then take the first block of time and divide it up using the 1-3-5 list method\u2014or the app http:\/\/www.135list.com\/ (yeah, baby).\u00a0 Now you have an executable list of what you are going to do during your first block of time.\u00a0 Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>[bctt tweet=&#8221;Break big projects into 2 hour chunks.&#8221; username=&#8221;@BlowingAwayWest&#8221;]<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Make it Routine<\/u>. Home improvement is a creative effort, and we erroneously think that creative projects need to be ethereal or tenuous, to tap into our muse.\u00a0 But it\u2019s been my experience that your muse appears in the middle of working.\u00a0 You can even make an appointment with your muse by working on your project at the same time each day or week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>[bctt tweet=&#8221;Your muse will appear in the middle of working on your project.&#8221; username=&#8221;@BlowingAwayWest&#8221;]<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Help Wanted.<\/u> There\u2019s nothing more frustrating than spinning your wheels because you don\u2019t know how to move your project forward.\u00a0 When in doubt, get help.\u00a0 I love this era in the history of the world, where there\u2019s accessible information everywhere and people are so willing to give it away for free.\u00a0 Email your fav blogger (hopefully me) with questions.\u00a0 Drive down to Home Depot and tap into the retired craftsmen that always seem to be working there.\u00a0 Get creative.\u00a0 I once called a plumbing company and the receptionist walked me through my problem for free.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>[bctt tweet=&#8221;When in doubt, get help.&#8221; username=&#8221;@BlowingAwayWest&#8221;]<\/div>\n<p>Now that you have all the tools to tackle your home improvement project, get to work because it isn\u2019t really work.\u00a0 What?!\u00a0 That\u2019s right\u2014your project is \u201cserious leisure,\u201d the kind of leisure that actually makes you more productive at work.\u00a0 Studies have shown that people who are ambitious and think about their work often, have projects or hobbies that absorb a lot of time and provide their brains a different way of thinking that keeps them sharper during their day jobs.\u00a0 As if I needed another reason to pull out the jigsaw!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d love to hear your thoughts!\u00a0 Did this help motivate you to get started on your project?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These 7 tips with turn your Pin Board projects into a reality &nbsp; Why do we need 7 tips to turn our projects into a reality?
