It\u2019s simple, fast and satisfying. It\u2019s a nice project for a notice because it will make you feel accomplished and you only really need to learn one new skill\u2014using the tile cutting saw.<br \/>\nIf you\u2019re a beginner, I suggest that you start by tiling a small tabletop. This is an old sofa table. Starting small allows you to play around with layouts and learn first-hand how to handle unusual cuts. Then, you can tackle tiling the bigger tabletop with confidence.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-615\" src=\"https:\/\/www.blowingawayoutwest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Tile-Tabletop-p-480x1024.jpg\" alt=\"tile tabletop\" width=\"480\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.blowingawayoutwest.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Tile-Tabletop-p-480x1024.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.blowingawayoutwest.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Tile-Tabletop-p-281x600.jpg 281w, https:\/\/www.blowingawayoutwest.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Tile-Tabletop-p-600x1280.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.blowingawayoutwest.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Tile-Tabletop-p.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Before we start to tile the tabletop, let\u2019s talk about tile saws.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Manual ceramic tile cutter<\/strong>: Costing around $30 dollars, these cutters score, then break the tile. Personally, I won\u2019t ever use a manual ceramic tile cutter. The cuts can be jagged, tiles often break, and it adds unneeded frustration to your project. It\u2019s the budget tile cutter, and can be attractive especially if your project is small but it\u2019s worth it to rent the wet tile saw for the same price rather than owning a cutter that doesn\u2019t work well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Wet tile saw:<\/strong> Priced at around $80 and up, a wet tile saw makes precise cuts. It\u2019s easy to use, and opens a world of possibilities unavailable when using the manual cutter. A wet tile saw allows you to design intricate layouts, tile insets and other exciting designs. This saw can be rented from a local home improvement store for around $30 per day.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"width: 120px; height: 240px;\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;OneJS=1&amp;Operation=GetAdHtml&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;source=ss&amp;ref=as_ss_li_til&amp;ad_type=product_link&amp;tracking_id=blowingaway-20&amp;marketplace=amazon&amp;region=US&amp;placement=B00CBGF3FS&amp;asins=B00CBGF3FS&amp;linkId=19fe64232546ee0eede3348d679a0659&amp;show_border=true&amp;link_opens_in_new_window=true\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Now that you\u2019ve picked your ceramic tile cutter, you will also need:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Tile<\/strong>\u2014enough to cover the tabletop with about 10% to spare for broken tiles and bad cuts.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 Adhesive.<\/strong> We use the adhesive dispensed using a caulking gun. It\u2019s easier to work with than thin-set adhesive on small surfaces.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 Non-sanded ceramic tile grout<\/strong>. Again, we use the type dispensed using a caulking gun. The grout comes in a variety of colors.<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 A soft large sponge<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1:<\/strong> Begin by laying out the tile on the table. You can keep it simple, or you can get creative. Once you have your design, mark the center of the table and work your way out from the center as you lay the tile.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-612\" src=\"https:\/\/www.blowingawayoutwest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Tile-Table-Top-1.jpg\" alt=\"tile tabletop\" width=\"500\" height=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2:<\/strong> Adhere the tile to the table using the adhesive. For a table top, leave small (1\/8\u201d) gaps between tiles for the grout.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-613\" src=\"https:\/\/www.blowingawayoutwest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Tile-Table-Top-2.jpg\" alt=\"tile tabletop\" width=\"500\" height=\"243\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3:<\/strong> Once the tiles have set, it\u2019s time to grout between the tiles. Small grout lines call for non-sanded tile grout. Sanded grout is for larger grout lines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4:<\/strong> Wipe the table with a damp sponge. This is how you \u201csand\u201d the non-sanded grout.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-614\" src=\"https:\/\/www.blowingawayoutwest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Tile-Table-Top-3.jpg\" alt=\"tile tabletop\" width=\"500\" height=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My favorite part about any project is the story behind it. We\u2019ve owned this sofa table for a while, and it\u2019s been used and abused until cup rings now decorate the entire top. So, it\u2019s needed a makeover for a long time. I love all the tile tabletops on Pinterest and wanted one of my own.<\/p>\n<p>I was set on blue tiles (to go with my pool), but the home improvement stores tend to stock neutral colored ceramic tile. I loved the idea of beautiful mosaic tiles, which would have cost around $50 for the small table top. However, I always like to stop by the Habitat for Humanity store to see what\u2019s new before I start a project. These stores sell building supply donations, so you never know what you\u2019re going to find. I always start with the new arrivals. In this case, I found boxes of brand new blue tiles for $10 each, and another box of the off-white tiles for the same price. Boxes of tile normally run between $40-80 depending on the style, so these stores offer deep discounts.<\/p>\n<p>All in, we paid $18 for the supplies to tile the tabletop.
