A pergola offers shade and some furniture protection without the hassle of engineering the roof for run-off.\u00a0 Pergola patios are also budget friendly, and infinitely customizable.\u00a0 Your pergola can be built to fit your space and personal style.<\/p>\n

Living where it\u2019s hot and sunny, the goals for our pergola included:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Nearly full coverage sun protection.<\/li>\n
  2. A modern look<\/li>\n
  3. An outdoor room for a fire pit<\/li>\n
  4. A trellis wall to increase the sun protection.\"Pergola\"<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    We designed this pergola to fit these goals, and in the process, created a structure that is easy to build.\u00a0 Typical pergolas are constructed by placing the roof slats into the crossbeams by notching each of the slats.\u00a0 This looks great, but is time consuming.\u00a0 With our pergola, we didn\u2019t want the roof slats visible above the crossbeams. Our design nests the roof slats on top of the crossbeams, flush with the outer frame of the pergola.<\/p>\n

    On with the tutorial!\"pergola\"<\/p>\n

    Step 1:<\/u>\u00a0 For this project, we constructed a concrete pad.\u00a0 Pergolas need to be stable, so you want a solid foundation of either concrete, pavers or other stable surface.\u00a0 Alternatively, you can set the pergola using footers, but we won\u2019t be covering that here.<\/p>\n

    Once you have your stable surface, mark and place the four corner uprights.\u00a0 We used 4\u201dx4\u201d treated redwood.\u00a0 Treated redwood is pricier than untreated, but it last longer and handles inclement weather better than untreated lumber.<\/p>\n

    Attach the 4- steel post base anchors to the concrete using a hammer drill and a concrete anchor.\"pergola\"<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Step 2: <\/u>\u00a0\u00a0The outer frame is constructed using 4- 2\u201dx6\u201d redwood.\u00a0 Our pergola is 12\u2019x12\u2019, so we used 12\u2019 2\u201dx6\u201d lumber.\u00a0 Adjust accordingly.<\/p>\n

    Attach the 2\u201dx6\u201d to the uprights using 2- 6\u201dx1\/2\u201d lag bolts per corner.<\/p>\n

    Step 3:<\/u>\u00a0 We placed 2\u201dx4\u201d redwood cross beams every 24 inches across the top, attaching them to the interior of the uprights (flush with the bottom of the upright) using grabber screws.<\/p>\n

    These cross beams will \u00a0support our roof.<\/p>\n

    Step 4:\u00a0 <\/u>For added support and because we just love the look, we added diagonal braces to the top corners using 4\u201dx4\u201d posts cut at an angle to fit the uprights.\u00a0 We attached the diagonal braces with 6\u201dx1\/2\u201d lag bolts.<\/p>\n

    Step 5:\u00a0 <\/u>For the back wall we added two additional 4\u201dx4\u201d posts to secure our wall beams to.\u00a0 The wall beams are 2\u201dx4\u201d redwood.\u00a0 We laid the pattern for the boards on the ground prior to installing them, so that our pergola wall had the design we wanted.\u00a0 For a classic back wall, you could attach lattice sheets.<\/p>\n

    Step 6:<\/u>\u00a0 At this point, we stained everything black. We wanted a two-toned wood pergola so we didn\u2019t install the roof slats until after we had stained the rest of the frame.<\/p>\n

    Step 7:\u00a0 <\/u>We wanted our roof slats to be as close together as possible without installing a solid roof.\u00a0 The closer your slats are together, the less sun penetration.\u00a0 Most pergolas space the roof slats between 1-4\u201d apart, we opted to space ours \u00be\u201d apart.<\/p>\n

    We attached the roof slats by nailing them into the 2\u201dx4\u201d cross beams.<\/p>\n

    We love the pergola.\u00a0 The close roof slats provide even more sun protection than we had anticipated.\u00a0 By planting a climbing Ivy at the base of the back wall, we have additional sun protection in the mornings.\u00a0 We also love the more modern design.<\/p>\n
