Fabric Flower Boutonnieres & Faux Leather Steampunk Lapel Pins<\/h1>\n

It’s time to see if I’m up to the task of actually making what I have pinned, rather than letting those beautiful pictures stay on my “someday” list.<\/p>\n

To make myself accountable, I’ve joined the 2018 monthly Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop, hosted by\u00a0My Pinterventures<\/a>. The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate all the participants of this hop (and you too) to not just pin, but to make it happen! Here’s to taking those Pinterest pins off the someday boards!<\/p>\n

I’ve been pinning a variety of boutonnieres and lapel pins because my boys (they’re a little too old to call them that anymore but I’m doing it anyway) love to look uniquely stylish for dances and church on Sunday.\u00a0 As much as we love flower boutonnieres, they have a shelf life of about 3 hours so I wanted to make boutonnieres and lapel pins that could be worn multiple times, and could be tailored to match their outfits, leading me to pin these fabric flower tutorials:<\/p>\n

Fabric Flower Boutonniere<\/h2>\n

My challenge this month is to create stylish fabric flower boutonnieres and faux leather steampunk lapel pins using those Pinterest pins as inspiration.\u00a0 I started out by making the fabric boutonnieres, simplifying the felt flower pattern by cutting 9- 2″ diameter circles out of blue cotton fabric.\u00a0 I discovered right away, that the flowers work best cut from fabric that is the same color on both sides, leading me to make a second fabric boutonniere out of purple satin fabric–which worked beautifully!\u00a0 Cut a piece of felt slightly smaller than your flower for the base (in this case, 1 1\/2″ diameter).\u00a0 Then fold the colored circle fabric in half once, and in half a second time, securing it with a dot of hot glue.\u00a0 Do this for each of the 9 fabric circles.\u00a0 Then glue the first four folded circles around your felt base (as shown in the picture below.)\u00a0 Secure the next four folded circles on top of the first four, overlapping them.\u00a0 The last folded circle is the center of the flower.\u00a0 Glue it to the center, pressing the folded tip down in the middle.\u00a0 Fluff your circles until they resemble a flower.\u00a0 Glue a pin to the back of the fabric flower.<\/p>\n

Steampunk Flower Lapel Pin<\/h2>\n

For the steampunk lapel pin, I used my Cricut Cutting Machine.\u00a0 I love my Cricut Access Premium<\/a> \u00a0membership because it gives me access to loads of cut files, like the flower in the picture above.\u00a0 I used the Cricut faux leather in gray and blue and cut a 2″ flower out of each.\u00a0 The flower is designed to fold into a natural 3D flower shape, so I simply glued it and according to the Cricut instructions.\u00a0 I overlapped the two different colored flowers on top of each other, then added a vintage button in the center and a steampunk accessory I picked up at Joann’s Fabrics to the bottom of the flower.\u00a0 I glued the same flat pin to to back of the faux leather flower that I used on the fabric flowers, but wish I would have used a straight stick pin instead.\u00a0 I think it would have laid down better on the collar.<\/p>\n

In a completely unrelated note, have you seen the cool steampunk lighting fixtures and wall clocks on\u00a0Houzz?<\/a>\u00a0 I’ve been honing my DIY skills so I can incorporate some of the amazing\u00a02018 Interior Design Trends<\/a>, and now I’m also officially trying to figure out how I can incorporate some steampunk into my home decor. So many projects, so little time!<\/p>\n

I really enjoy using Pinterest as inspiration, challenging myself to a unique take on the project.\u00a0 It’s amazing the number of ideas a Pinterest pin can create, isn’t it?\u00a0 Some of my most popular posts were the result of ideas sparked by someone else’s idea.\u00a0 My Be Thankful Door Sign<\/a>\u00a0was inspired by the tall farmhouse Welcome signs I was seeing all over Pinterest.\u00a0 Amazing DIY’s shared on Pinterest led to my Sweet Little Chill Pills<\/a>, Stuffed Animal Zoo<\/a>, Hot Cocoa Bar<\/a>, Scandinavian Ornaments<\/a>, and the Dollar Store Baskets<\/a>.<\/p>\n
